We all understand the importance of a good education.  Many Americans assume that the opportunities for education that exist in America exist in other countries, but they are mistaken.  The Ministry of Education in Kenya has set lofty goals for improvement and great progress has been made over the last several years.  However, implementation of these standards across the country has proven to be both difficult and challenging.

The reality of education in Kenya is that it is expensive and still out of reach for many families who want their children to attend school. Although public school is considered “free”, it is far different from American public education.  First of all, a child must have a uniform in order to attend school.  Keep in mind that many families are still living in mud huts with dirt floors and have difficulty providing basic needs such as food and clothing. Secondly, even though school is “free”, there are school fees that must be paid. This means that many children, especially orphans, do not have the opportunity to attend school.  Current statistics are difficult to locate, but the information I was able to find stated that 85% of children attend primary school (K-8th grades).  Of those who attend school, 48% do not finish primary school.   Many of our children at the home had not attended school before coming to live with us.

The class size of many classes in the local public school our children attended before the expansion of Carry the Light Christian Academy was 80 students or more and there were only a few copies of textbooks available for the students to share.  Even though the children attended school six days a week and the hours were long, the amount of true learning taking place was definitely subpar. It is expensive to run a private school.  There are textbooks to purchase (we provide a textbook for each child), teacher’s salaries to pay, furnishings to provide, and more.   However, it is an investment in our children we feel is well worthwhile.  Training up the next generation in Kenya to the best of our ability is a charge from The Lord we take seriously.  Many community families are finding it beneficial to invest their school fees in a higher standard of education by enrolling their children in Carry the Light Christian Academy.  Thus we are able reach more children as we provide a quality education for our own children.

After completing 8th grade, students are given a test.  Only students who pass the test may proceed to secondary school (what Americans call high school).  The chances of placement in a better quality boarding school are directly related to the score a child receives on their 8th grade exit test.   School fees at this level of education are higher and the better the school, the higher the fees.   As our children progress through primary school, the number of children reaching secondary school will increase and along with that our expenses for providing for their educational needs.   And then there is university and the many opportunities obtaining a higher education provides. We are committed to helping each and every child reach their educational goals and take the place God desires for them to occupy in society to the best of our ability.

Sponsorship donations provide for many basic needs the children have, but as costs continue to rise, we are finding our budget continuing to be stretched.  Please consider helping us enable our children to reach their educational goals by giving to the education fund.
