Where will the cages be located?
The Fish Cage Project is located in Usigu, Kenya. The Children’s Home is lake front property and the cages are located just across the way on the other side of a cul de sac in the water.
What do you feed them?
Our staff goes to the cages by boat 3 times per day for feeding. We purchase raw materials and mix our own feeds. This insures that we know the mix is nutritionally adequate to support rapid growth.
How will you sell all of those fish?
Some will be sold to the local community, others to fish mongers who will take them for re-sell, but our primary market will be commercial and retail establishments such as hotel chains and restaurants which are looking for a sustainable supply of fish every month.
How do you keep people from stealing the fish and cages?
Each cage has a padlock and the area is routinely patrolled. Our staff also visits the cages during feeding 3 times a day. As the project expands, our future plans include a floating guard shack in the middle of the cages which will be manned 24 hours a day.
What keeps the cages from floating away especially during a storm?
The cages are secured to 16mm nylon ropes in long rows of 10 to 15 cages. Each row is anchored to the bottom of the lake with several heavy concrete anchors.
